Director, UI/UX Design

The Director, UI/UX Design will build the design team from the ground up. You will partner closely with product, engineering, creative, communities, and merchandising teams to help develop a company-wide culture of thoughtful, intuitive user experience design across disciplines. You will be a champion for the ideal customer experience at all levels of decision-making from strategy to execution.
Here's what you'll do as part of the team:
  • Partner with product management, engineering, creative team, communities, and merchandisers within a data-informed design process incorporating internal feedback, external site reviews, user research and quantitative data derived from multivariate testing.
  • Work with Creative/Brand team to establish a clear, unified, and distinctive site-wide visual style aligned with Massdrop's brand
  • Review and approve all web and mobile design projects ranging in scope from the smallest of adjustments to major features and even a significant site rebrand.
  • Partner with Massdrop's leadership team to develop and align with company and product strategy and to implement that strategy as it pertains to software design.
  • As a leader of the design team, you will inspire and motivate the team to deliver their best work and provide effective and constructive feedback to the design team as well as others.
And here are the skills and experience you'll need to be successful:
  • Ideally between 5 and 8 years design experience.
  • Experience at 2 - 3 different consumer-facing companies, preferably including role(s) in well established social/e-commerce startups.
  • Experience leading UI/UX designers in at least one previous role.
  • Experience partnering with User Researchers and preferably personal experience having executed user research projects
  • A desire to build a design team and help to establish a culture of design at Massdrop.
  • A desire to get hands dirty -- help with wireframes, prototyping, iterating on designs, and refining to high fidelity as we build out the team.
  • Proficiency in documentation and communication is essential in sharing information and articulating the rationale behind the design decisions among the development team.
  • Deep understanding of HCI, demonstrated through extensive work experience and/or formal academic training

This is a full-time on-site position at our San Francisco office.
