Director, Communications

United States

Our company is growing and we're looking for a creative, passionate, and scrappy Director of Communications to join our team. Reporting directly to the CMO you will drive our communications strategy to the press (PR), the industry analysts (AR), and our social channels. We have a big appetite to be a category leader and looking for that unique person who can help us achieve these goals. We have a fun, collaborative, fast paced environment and are driven for success.
Are you up for the opportunity?
You need to have:
  • demonstrated experience in the B2B software world (database, middleware, open source, etc)
  • be energetic and scrappy (you get things done, embrace guerilla marketing, thinking outside the box, etc)
  • have rock-solid writing skills, love making and telling stories
  • experience marketing products designed for an open source, technical, and developer audience
  • demonstrable track record of creating and delivering on communication programs
What you'll be doing:
  • Define the public relations strategy, evaluate agencies, and plan with buy-in from the key stakeholders. You must be obsessed with details and project management -- this role will be key in ensuring all plans are executed with precision and on time.
  • Facilitate the development of thought-leadership content and collateral to category creation.
  • Identify product, customer, and third-party announcement opportunities and leverage those opportunities via direct outreach, social outreach, contributed articles and the like.
  • Produce press releases, articles, speeches, executive biographies, briefing books, pitches, Q&As, and other quality communications materials as needed.
  • Develop and maintain strong trusted relationships with key trade press and industry analysts as well as product owners and executives.
  • Ability to manage an agency team effectively to achieve ongoing communication goals.
  • Set up and/or leverage speaking opportunities for key industry trade shows and conferences
  • Drive social media and outreach -- you should be a social media leader and want to build a large and active community of influencers.
  • Assist the other members of the marketing team on communication activities such as blogs, web content and the like.
Your background, skills and experience:
  • Minimum 8 years related experience. Bachelor's degree in mass communications, journalism, public relations or equivalent experience.
  • Prior PR agency experience (or equivalent) in promoting software products that have a strong developer/technical audience.
  • Proven ability and knowledge of technical terminology in the B2B software arena.
  • Prior experience on creating and implementing a PR and AR plan that had proven results
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Solid understanding of key marketing disciplines including digital marketing, public relations, web, social media, etc.
