Making Sure Every Ride Matters at HIMSS18

On March 5-9, thousands of health information and technology professionals will descend upon Las Vegas for HIMSS18, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, a week-long conference focusing on how the power of change transforms the delivery of healthcare to achieve better medical outcomes.

So why is a ridesharing innovator like Lyft company attending HIMSS18?  Because we’re absolutely thrilled to share our work in healthcare and how we’re improving patients’ lives through non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) solutions.

Lyft rides ensure that millions of patients annually — many of whom are in underserved communities — keep their appointments. This leads to a significantly improved quality of life and even more efficient business operations.

Industry leaders such as Ascension and Sutter Health will be speaking at HIMSS18 about their experiences with Lyft ridesharing and how care teams have been able to quickly and easily request scheduled-in-advance or on-demand rides for their patients’ convenience.

Lyft will also be giving back to local cancer patients at HIMSS18 through the American Cancer Society in Las Vegas. We’ll provide a donation for every Lyft ride taken while in Business mode during the conference from March 4 through March 9.

To take part, simply set up your Lyft Business Profile. Next, tap your profile photo access the side menu. Then tap ‘Promos’ and just enter EVERYRIDEMATTERS before you request your ride. We’ll direct 5% of your total ride cost to the Las Vegas chapter of the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery® Program, which ensures cancer patients receive the care they need without the additional stress over how to get to treatments.

Lyft partners with thousands of health systems, individual healthcare organizations, payors, NEMT brokers, GPOs, senior living operators, home care providers, and direct-to-consumer healthcare technology providers to minimize missed or late appointments, while lowering costs and improving patient satisfaction.

According to a recent article in The Atlantic, one-third of adults living at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty line in Cleveland stated that it was “hard” or “very hard” to keep medical appointments. A survey of nearly 600 cancer patients in Texas revealed that a number skipped treatments because they couldn’t make it to their healthcare provider’s office or facility.

Researchers have also found that in some instances, patients waited until they were sick enough that it became a medical emergency, so they could be transported by ambulance. Not surprisingly, non-emergency medical transportation has grown into a $6 billion market in the US, with most of that money spent on the poor and elderly, who either don’t have cars or simply can’t drive anymore.

Lyft is continuing to expand its non-emergency medical transportation offerings to address the enormous shortfall in rides needed by underserved communities for medical treatments. We currently work with all ten brokers that manage transportation for Medicaid. These brokers combined handle more than 150 million rides annually in non-emergency medical transportation.
