Lyft Survey Finds Ridesharing is the Ultimate Millennial Escape for the Irish Goodbye

Ever been at a house party and noticed that a friend snuck out the door without a word?

Chances are you may have been the victim of an Irish Goodbye — that’s when a person discreetly leaves a bar, party, or dinner without first telling anyone or saying goodbye. The good news? You’re definitely not alone.

Lyft recently surveyed 1,000 people and discovered that Irish Goodbyes are actually pretty common – so much so that three out of four people have at least one friend who is known for frequent Irish Goodbyes. The survey also found that men are more likely to practice the Irish Goodbye than women are.

One huge clue that your friend is about to Irish Goodbye you: They open up their Lyft app to request a ride — but they haven’t yet said their goodbyes. After all, the survey found that 22% of millenials are likely to hop in a rideshare to make their getaway.

Thankfully, it’s not just our friends who have mastered the art of Irish Goodbyes. While many people have at least one friend who’s known for ducking out without a goodbye, more than 2 in 5 people, including half of millennials, frequently leave a bar or social gathering without saying goodbye to anyone first.

In case you plan on being one of the offenders, here’s how you can you make your escape this St. Patrick’s Day:

Pull Off the Perfect Irish Goodbye With These 5 Tips

  • Don't leave your Irish Goodbye up to chance. Schedule your ride like thousands of Lyft users did last St. Patrick's Day.

  • Sneaking out of the bar with a few close friends? Make sure they pay their fair share by splitting the fare.

  • Based on Lyft data, leaving at either 8 PM or 11 PM increases your chances for an even quicker exit.

  • On the flip side, avoid leaving at 7 PM or 10 PM  to avoid more people trying to exit as the same time as you are.

  • The best Irish Goodbye ends with a late-night bite — stop at your favorite bodega or take-out spot before heading home.

And whether you’re the one pulling the Irish Goodbye, or you’re just victim of one, everyone needs a good place to start off the night. Check out this list of top national spots to eat and drink before deciding how you want to say goodbye this St. Patrick’s Day.

Methodology

The Lyft Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (among 1,000 U.S. St. Patrick’s Day celebrants ages 21+, defined as those who plan to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day 2018 at a bar or restaurant. The survey was conducted between March 6 and March 9, 2018, via email invitation and online survey.

Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
