Celebrating One Year of Statewide Ridesharing Legislation in New Jersey

It’s hard to believe that one year ago today, New Jersey became the 36th state in the nation to enact comprehensive ridesharing legislation to allow companies like Lyft to operate statewide. There’s a lot to celebrate in year one — Garden State residents have helped to create economic opportunity and increased connectivity throughout the state, by driving for and riding with Lyft.

For riders, Lyft means increased flexibility and more opportunities for exploration. In Newark alone, 50 percent of residents use their car less because they can call a Lyft; 66 percent go out more and stay out longer.

“Thanks to Lyft, now I can have a night on the town with my wife without worrying about the car,” said Ron Maver, of North Arlington, NJ. “Dinner and a movie has never been easier, and we love to share a bottle of wine and unwind worry-free!”

Innovative partnerships with places where people gather—such as Newark Airport, the Atlantic City Convention Center, the Sun Bank National Center, Rutgers University, and even the city of Summit—mean that Lyft is on the go when and where New Jerseyans are, making trips easier than ever while helping to reduce reliance on personal cars.

For drivers, Lyft means the ability to earn needed income on a flexible schedule, and new opportunities to make connections. 95 percent of drivers say a flexible schedule is very important to their decision to drive for Lyft— while 67 percent of drivers have also connected with a new friend or business opportunity from a ride.

"With the flexibility of driving for Lyft, I can cater my schedule to my needs. That's freedom," said New Jersey resident and Lyft driver Tambazine Longin.

Local elected officials celebrated the state milestone:

“One year after the passage of ridesharing in New Jersey, we’re thrilled at what a difference it has made in our state,” said Assemblymember Joseph Lagana. “It improves safety on the road, helps bring needed income to hard working New Jersey residents, and makes our air cleaner and traffic lighter in the process. This is truly a win-win for New Jersey and we look forward to many more successful years.”

“Lyft is not just a ridesharing service — it’s really a holistic resource for New Jersey residents and visitors,” said State Senator Troy Singleton. “By investing in our communities through innovative partnerships with some of our state’s top tourism destinations, resources for drivers to help them achieve, and constant vigilance to reduce impaired driving, Lyft is helping to make our communities better and safer.”

As more people than ever sign up to drive for Lyft in New Jersey, we’re committed to helping drivers create a network to share resources and build connections. In 2017, Lyft hosted its first-ever event for hard-of-hearing drivers from New York and New Jersey as part of National Deaf Awareness Month, enrolled drivers in the ACA with an event in Willingboro, hosted resume-building workshops in Jersey City, and even offered free car washes for all Lyft drivers in the state.

We’re just getting started. Stay tuned for more partnerships to help you live and travel more seamlessly in 2018.

Thank you, New Jersey Lyft community, for choosing to drive and ride with us. We’re proud to be a part of your great state.
